Government in talks with stakeholders to bring back road tolls- Asenso Boakye

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced that, in order to formalise the decision to reinstall road tolls, it has started interacting with important stakeholders.

Road tolls need to be reinstated, according to Francis Asenso-Boakye, the sector minister, in order to assist the government in fixing some of the nation’s dilapidated roadways.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways issued an order in 2021 mandating the nationwide termination of toll collecting, with effect from November 18, 2021.

There were differing opinions on the abolition of tolls, which were implemented in advance of the e-levy and to relieve traffic congestion at toll booths.

Speaking on the subject, Mr. Asenso-Boakye said that in order to reinstate road tolls, his government is looking for support from important parties.

“[Road] maintenance also means money. In many countries, they use the tolls that they collect from road tolls to finance maintenance. But in our case, we have suspended it, and I think it is a good time for us to start the discussion to bring these road tolls back and get money to maintain our roads.

“That is very important, and we have started the process by engaging the various stakeholders to get their buy-in to make sure that we bring the road tolls back.”
