Glasgow Rangers midfielder Mohammed Diomande has chosen to represent Côte d’Ivoire over Ghana after switching his international allegiance to Ivory Coast. The 22-year-old has been in the mix as to which country to officially represent in the past few months, although he has earned some caps with the Ivorian junior side.
Born in Côte d’Ivoire, Diomande spent much of his formative years in Ghana and had the opportunity to enrol in Right to Dream Academy in Akosombo before moving to Danish side FC Nordsjaelland and eventually penned a contract with Rangers during the last summer transfer window.
In the last two months during the FIFA international window, Diomande was called up by Black Stars coach Otto Addo for the two friendly games against Nigeria and Uganda in Marrakech, Morocco.
However, he declined the chance to play for Ghana. He disclosed in an interview that his dream has always been to play for Ivory Coast, the country of his parents.
“I have always dreamed of playing for Ivory Coast. I am prepared to contribute to the Elephants, whether at the senior level or with the U23 team,” Diomande stated.
